Measuring and recording your progress

Welcome to the weekly warble here at Ideanthro Movement.

This week I'd like to talk about the benefit of regularly measuring and recording your progress in your training. It's well and truly inspired by this photo of Adrian stretching in a measurable and repeatable manner.

The reason to measure and record your progress is that it makes it easier to see your progress and that's both good for motivation, and for refining your training to get the most out of it.

A lot of progress in the health and fitness space is slow and gradual over time. If you don't record, you'll only notice the occasional big leap forward. All the regular, but little, gains will go unnoticed.

The thing to remember here is that progress isn't linear. Sometimes it might stagnate. Sometimes you might temporarily even go backwards before making a step forwards. That's totally ok. This is the benefit of recording regularly. When you record regularly you can look at long term trends rather than individual performances and see what's really going on.

So what should you measure and record? Anything that's relevant to your fitness journey and goals, and which doesn't impose upon you. You don't want recording your progress to feel like a chore.

In Adrian's case he regularly videos his stretching sessions, and in the particular stretch that he's doing in this photograph he uses his hands as a guide to see how close he is getting his head to his foot. In this manner he can look back at old footage and see his progress over time.

And that's the benefits of regularly measuring and recording your progress.

I hope you have a lovely day!

Cheers

Jack
