Expression and creativity in health and fitness

Welcome to the weekly warble here at Ideanthro Movement.

This week I'm going to talk about expression and creativity as they apply to health, fitness and the gym.

If you watch any high level sport (let alone a creative art like dance) you'll notice that top athletes don't all move the same. They have style and grace that is uniquely theirs.

The gym, and training for health and fitness should be like this.

There are fundamental human movement patterns we all share and should seek to achieve. Ways that we should all move in common. For example, when squatting our knees should track in line with our toes, not cave to the inside. But on top of this, there's a lot of room for individual expression.

This is a true advantage of bringing creative movements such as vaulting, climbing, hand balancing and more into your training. They have depth and have room for creativity and expression, and ultimately that makes them enjoyable and fulfilling.

Do the foundational stuff well. Squat, deadlift, push, pull, run etc, but then explore the more creative and expressive side of things as well.

For a little bit of inspiration, here is a video from not so long ago, where what would have been a fairly normal class turned into an exploration of expression and movement in vaulting.

Cheers
